Schmidt, Lorenz
Lorenz Schmidt was born in Schweinfurt, Germany in 1958. At age13 he received his first guitar lessons. From 1978-1984 he studied guitar with Professor Kreidler and composition with Professor Weiand at the College of Music in Cologne, Wuppertal Campus. He has been an instructor for guitar and music theory at the Schweinfurt Music School since 1983. In addition to teaching and his compositional output, he has been performed many concerts with the Duo Stringendo, the Prisma-Ensemble and as a soloist since 1990. In 1991 he won third prize at the 9th Vienna Summer Seminar for New Music for his composition "Die Vertreibung der Stille" ("The Expulsion of Silence"). The CD "Klangräume" ("Soundscapes") with compositions for two guitars was released in 1994 by the label Kreuzberg Records. The main focus of his creative output is chamber music for guitar(s) in diverse combination with other instruments. In past years, an increasing number of works for other instrumentations have appeared (piano, choir, string quartet, accordion and chamber orchestra). His musical language is oriented around free atonality but without being constrained by the bounds of serial techniques.
