The guitarist and composer Wulfin Lieske is an artist of international reputation who, through his manifold collaborations as a soloist and chamber music performer, has guested on various stages throughout the world with personalities such as Gidon Kremer, Astor Piazzolla, Christoph Homberger, The Hilliard Ensemble and the Orpheus Quartet. Wulfin Lieske studied at the State Conservatory of Music in Cologne. After early experiences in composition and improvisation as a founding member of the Quartet Extempore, since 1980 Lieske has concentrated primarily on works for chamber orchestra. Much of his work is centered around the guitar and his pieces include solo cycles such as TAQSIM I–III, FOUR BAGATELLES ON 52 and his newest work, NYMPHÉAS d’après Claude Monet, as well as duets such as ASTORIANA and the quartet 52STEIN. He has also composed chamber music works incorporating other instruments: these include SONATA LACRIMOSA with violoncello and CINQ TABLEAUX SUR SCHUBERT with string quartet. His compositions for piano represent a separate category. In recent years, Wulfin Lieske has increasingly turned to composing for larger ensembles. Commissioned by the EXPO 2000, he wrote the full-length oratorio ÜBER DEN WASSERN (“Above The Waters”; including a performance and lighting installation) for the vocal quartet The Hilliard Ensemble and the Quartet Bronsky Ritual. In 2002 he composed the choir composition DER GESANG DER GEISTER ÜBER DEN WASSERN („The Spirit’s Voices Above the Waters“) and in 2004, the LUXOR GUITAR CONCERTO for guitar, percussion and large string orchestra. The solo cycle TAQSIM I–III was released by Kreuzberg Records in 2004 and the bulk of his works have been published by Edition Margaux.
