Chung, Il-Ryun

AUTOR

Il-Ryun Chung was born in Frankfurt, Germany in 1964, the son of Korean parents. He spent his childhood in Korea. From 1985-1989 he studied guitar and composition with Carlo Domeniconi. From 1989-1996, he continued the latter with Professor Jolyon Brettingham-Smith at the College of the Arts in Berlin. At the same time he received instruction in traditional Korean percussion music (SamulNori) from Kim Duk-Soo. In 1992 he received a composition scholarship and in 1993 as well as 1997, composition commissions from the Berlin Sentas. At the 1994 Berlin Festival for Guitar and Chamber Music, he received highest honors for his composition "Movements in Circles II". This piece and other compositions by Chung were recorded on a portrait CD in 1998. In addition to his concert activities as a guitar soloist and accompanying drummer for the Korean epic song form PanSori and his compositional work, in 1997, together with Matthias Leupold, he founded the duo "saitenwege" ("stringways") for violin and guitar. The composer Il-Ryun Chung lives and works in Berlin.
