Dietmar Ungerank was born in 1950 in Steinach am Br. in Tyrolia and learned guitar at age 12 by means of an old method book so that he could play music with a friend and they could perform together. Although he initially finished a course in mechanical drawing after graduating from high school, music was always at the center of his life. After deepening his knowledge of music theory and practice on his own, he passed his guitar teaching exam in 1977 "with highest honors". Since 1978, as an instructor at the Hof Symphony Music School, he has guided guitar students in preparing for their university auditions and future guitar teachers have received invaluable instruction and tools from him for passing their State approving examinations. A meeting with Carlo Domeniconi encouraged him to experiment with pieces of his own. A further deciding encounter was with the diseuse Gina Pietsch out of which a fruitful collaboration the treatment of Brecht songs emerged. A series of concerts, radio and CD recordings followed. Impressed by the expressiveness of literature and its images, Ungerank's music is inspired and influenced by these elements. He is chairman of the Hof Area Composers Association.
